Our lady readers will pardon us if we pause for a moment to seek what could have been the thought concealed beneath those enigmatic words of the archdeacon:

"This will kill that. The book will kill the edifice."

To our mind, this thought had two faces. In the first place, it was a priestly thought. It was the affright of the priest in the presence of a new agent, the printing press. It was the terror and dazzled amazement of the men of the sanctuary, in the presence of the luminous press of Gutenberg. It was the pulpit and the manuscript taking the alarm at the printed word: something similar to the stupor of a sparrow which should behold the angel Legion unfold his six million wings. It was the cry of the prophet who already hears emancipated humanity roaring and swarming; who beholds in the future, intelligence sapping faith, opinion dethroning belief, the world shaking off Rome. It was the prognostication of the philosopher who sees human thought, volatilized by the press, evaporating from the theocratic recipient. It was the terror of the soldier who examines the brazen battering ram, and says:--"The tower will crumble." It signified that one power was about to succeed another power. It meant, "The press will kill the church." -- The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo: Chapter II

magazine design + art direction
I conceived and implemented two redesigns for this magazine, including logos, website, and all collateral materials (media kits, invites, multi-media presentation, etc.). I also directed and produced all covers, editorial stories, and photo shoots. Click the link below to check out every cover from my first to my last - its a pretty exciting progression.

website design
I did this site for composer-vocalist Lisa Bielawa. This was really fun to do as her work is truly unique. Her bio says, "She often takes inspiration for her work from literary sources. Her music explores the ritual and phenomenological nature of music-making and listening, employing instrumental forces in ways that are both dramatic and intimate in their use of time and space."

book design
This is a book I created for the Yvon Lambert and Maxwell Davidson Galleries in New York published on the occasion of the exhibtion of Tom Wesselmann's Drop-Out paintings, studies, and sketches. The work is really unbelievable. I created a die-cut for the cover and and used close-up shots of the wall in Mr. Wesselman's studio as backgrounds in place of simple white pages. You have to call this in and check it out first hand.

Dear Sir or Madame,
I have so many friends that create excellent art and would love to offer up an opportunity for everyone to exchange their work through the mail. I was inspired by Ray Johnson who did something to this effect in the 1950s.
To get started, read the attached instructions. If this goes well I hope to do one every month and create a book from all the submissions. I have some really amazing people already involved. Don't you want an amazing one-of-a-kind piece of art?

I illustrated and designed this "wallpaper" for The Rockwell Group. It's a clear film adhered to leaded-glass panels that are back lit and float beyond the wall. Meet me at the St. Regis for a créme de menthe to check it out.

identity design + branding
I have been working with MATA for close to eight years and have done everything from their logo to their website. Founded in 1996 by Philip Glass, Eleonor Sandresky, and Lisa Bielawa, MATA presents pieces by young composers during a week-long festival, held each spring in New York City.

I designed this exhibition for the New Housing: New York design competition at the Center For Architecture. The focus of the event was to find a good and green architectural template for affordable housing. We created a two story graphic time-line depicting the history of housing in New York City.

I designed these graphics to go with a brilliantly designed exhibit of kids architectural work. The idea was to have the graphics be as crafty as the handywork of the K through 6-ers. 1110:Architect designed the web system that was as strong as it was subtle.
Book, Web + Identity Design
Jack's Brook is a poetry press that prints really beautiful small run books. I just did a single poem in a limited edition run for Edward Field on the most ridiculously amazing paper (Eames Canvas Print) and am working on the Jack's Brook website and identity design. I'm shooting everything now so check back soon...

Still Life 61 Catalogue
I created this catalogue for the Yvon Lambert Gallery in New York. It's a mini catalogue showcasing a Tom Wesselmann freestanding still life. As usual, the Wesselmanns and Yvon Lambert people are the coolest people to work with. Photographer Jeff Sturges, a true genius, shot all of the work and its by far one of my best printed pieces. You have to see it in person!

Thanks to Emilio and Claire.
This was a so much fun to work on!

And big ups to Kevin Uhl at Project Graphic for an AMAZING print job!

Thank

Rubber Love
I just changed my identity by adding a little ghost to my business cards so I created these cute little rubber stamps to stamp on just about everything. I have the most amazing custom rubber stamp man so if you are looking to create something for yourself or as a gift - give me a ring! If you want to see what they look like - send me a letter and I'll write you back and use my new stamped stationary!

South Street Seaport Musem- On-going
Bi-Monthly Newsletter
This is a bi-monthly newsletter I designed for The South Street Seaport Museum. The museum itself is an amazing place, sort of caught in time but with a modern edge and I try to reflect that in all their printed materials. I've slowly been redesigning all of their printed material with Broadside as the basis for all design work. You really should check the place out its kind of a hidden treasure.
Ne(x)tworks - Winter 2007
Brochure
This little brochure incorporates some hand drawn line work and a whole bunch of nutty photo-shoped images. Ne(x)tworks is a collaborative ensemble of musicians creating and interpreting work that features a dynamic relationship between composition and improvisation. In performance and recordings, the group locates pathways into various types of notation systems and interfaces, striving for a meaningful dialogue with the past, present, and future of creative music. Pretty cool!

Book
Yet another book to accompany an amazing artist's show. Sven created some amazing camping paintings and they reminded me of my old sleeping bag as a kid. Using brown cloth on a case-bound book with cherry red endpapers was my way of turning this book into my old sleeping bag.
Idenity - Logo Design
I worked with Jesse Goldman to create this logo and identity package for DuMont restaurant in Brooklyn. This place is truly the place to hang out in Brooklyn. The paper I used for the business card is a rubberized paper and feels even better than it looks! Stop by DuMont and ask to feel a business card.

Dressler Restaurant - Fall 2007
I drew these organic forms for the owners of Dressler to highlight the amazing antique moldings and tin ceiling that exist in this beautiful space. The food here is really great. Try the fish!
Jungle - Summer 2008
Identity design
This identity was designed for Amanda Mitchell at Jungle. They do garden and floral design. They will have a Williamsburg location very soon. Keep an eye out for the big silver ANT! They have an amazing collection of furniture and odd and ends that all look like they came straight from the Cabinet of Natural Curiosities. This card is platinum foil on rubberized paper. Looks good - feels good.
